Black IPAs & food to match it with
THE BEER STYLE: Despite the name being an oxymoron, Black India PALE Ales are a call to arms for your tastebuds to march straight on to Flavour Town. Originating in the US in the 90’s we didn’t really see too many in Australia until after 2010. Bitterness can range from aggressive to mellow with most sitting somewhere in the middle. The malt department can go from roasty to toffee to coffee to chocolate, all in one sip. And from the hops expect anything that you would from an IPA. We’ve got a lot of love for this flavour packed style.
FOOD TO MATCH IT WITH: The big flavours will hold up and cut through rich, fatty foods or roasts with ease. Yeah we’re talking a greasy cheeseburger, old mates’ brisket or charred winter veggies. For the cheese heads match it up with a smelly blue or a wedge of aged cheddar – it’s a flavour sensation. And if its dessert you’re after pair it simply with some fine dark chocolate, perhaps a carrot cake and most definitely your Italian neighbours’ tiramisu.
